College of Engineering holds senior design competition


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar University's (QU) College of Engineering's annual Senior Design Contest brought together graduating students from majors to showcase their winning projects before a panel of judges from local industry.

A total of 168 students comprising 60 teams presented 60 projects from the college's programmes to 41 judges from various institutions and industrial companies.

The projects were evaluated for innovation, commercial potential, sustainability and presentation quality.

The competition was sponsored by Qapco, Dolphin Energy Limited and Occidental Petroleum of Qatar (Oxy Qatar).

The first three best projects were selected from the Department of Civil Engineering, the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, the Department of Chemical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering Programme, Mechanical Engineering Programme, Computer Engineering Programme, Computer Science Programme and the Department of Electrical Engineering.

Dr Rashid Alammari, Dean of the college, said, "We are proud to have such cooperation with industrial companies that provide support and encouragement for our students."

He said the contest challenges each team to articulate their project's objective, strategy and results to a diverse audience.

"As such, of chief importance in the competition is the ability to clearly communicate complex subject matter in a user-friendly way. All projects reflect the students' commitment to produce innovative and quality work with the support of the faculty.

"The competition also motivates them to excel in designing and producing their projects where they gain feedback from judges that will serve them well in their future endeavours."

Adel Ahmed Albuainain, General Manager, Dolphin Energy, said, "Through our sponsorship of the contest, which brings together industry and academia, we hope to provide opportunities so that young talent can pursue their dreams. There is a growing demand for new technology and innovation and the contest recognises that while seeking to foster the next generation of leaders as part of Qatar National Vision 2030."
