Qatar's Ambassador to US: Eradication of Terrorism Begins with Good Governance


(MENAFN- QNA) HE Qatar's Ambassador to the United States Mohammed Jaham Al-Kuwari has reiterated that the eradication of terrorism is a long and complex process that first begins with good governance, civil rights and education.

This came as HE Qatar's Ambassador to the United States participated in a seminar on 'relations between Qatar and the United States and the regional situation', held by World Affairs Council in Seattle in Washington State, and attended by a number of researchers and those interested in Arab-American relations.

   Addressing the seminar, HE Al-Kuwari touched on multiple issues including the future of US- Qatar relations, a political review of the Arab Spring, the Yemeni situation, the war in Syria, Iraq, and the rise of the "Daash" organization.

He commended the setting up of 'Qatar-Katrina' Fund, the efforts to rebuild the city of New Orleans, and the provision of financial support to local organizations with a focus on education, housing and health care, referring to his meetings with civil society officials, students and citizens who benefited from the project during his last visit to New Orleans. He stressed that the provision of humanitarian assistance is an integral part of the culture of the State of Qatar and its diplomacy.

HE the Ambassador added that Daesh organization cannot be defeated overnight through military action, pointing out that the eradication of terrorism is a long and complex process that first begins with good governance, civil rights and education.

HE Al-Kuwari added: 'On one hand, Iraq provides us with an important lesson about the transformation of sectarian unrest to violence, and the possibility that national reconciliation can be a step towards the fight against violence and terrorism on the other hand,' stressing on the need to involve Sunnis in the political process which depends on the Iraqi government's readiness and ability to do so.

While pointing to the US influential role in this regard, he said that the Gulf Cooperation Council member states can play a positive role in pacifying the Sunni tribes and factions and redirecting their energies to building the state. He at the same time stressed the need to stop outside interference in Iraq's internal affairs. (MORE)
