Jordan Planning Minister, ESCWA executive discuss bilateral cooperation

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhouri met Sunday with Undersecretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Rima Khalaf, to discuss various areas of cooperation between Jordan and the commission.

The two sides underlined the importance of boosting joint efforts, particularly regarding implementation of the "Jordan 2025" blueprint output, which will provide a roadmap for the development strategy, stressing the need to maintain the participatory approach.

The discussion also dealt with cooperation regarding formulating Jordan's position toward the post-2015 global development agenda and sustainable development goals as well as the global conference for financing on development and the UN climate change conference.

The meeting also tackled scopes of cooperation in achieving sustainable development goals and an upcoming United Nations summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda that will be held in September in New York.

The UN summit will be preceded by two key international conferences that the government had begun preparation for; the first is the high-level political sustainable development forum in New York in late June, which follows up and reviews implementation of the post-2015 development agenda and sustainable development goals, in which the minister of planning will head the Jordanian delegation.

The second is the third International Conference on Financing for Development due to be held in Addis Ababa in July, which will discuss financing mechanisms that guarantee achieving sustainable development goals at all three global, regional and national levels.

Another global event discussed during the meeting was the Paris conference in December that Jordan will take part in, which will seek to reach a comprehensive agreement by all parties concerning contributions by individual states and efforts that all countries will undertake to counter climate change effects and ways to expedite global efforts in this endeavour.

Fakhouri said that the burdens borne by Jordan, as an upper middle income state, on behalf of regional countries and the international community, should be taken into consideration. He stressed the need to provide soft financing tools to bolster the Kingdom's capability and resilience as it grapples with the repercussions of the Syrian crisis and the presence of Syrian refugees, noting that regional instability had adversely impacted the Kingdom's development agenda.
