(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Death sentences against Egypt's deposed President Mohamed Morsi and leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood are a "massacre of law and basic rights," Turkish President Tayyip ErdoÄŸan said on Une 16 as he called for action.
"We call on the international community to act to withdraw these death sentences, given under the instructions of the coup regime, and to put an end to this path which could seriously endanger the peace of Egyptian society," ErdoÄŸan said in a statement.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet DavutoÄŸlu described the sentence of life imprisonment pronounced against Morsi as a test for both the Western countries and international media in their stance for democratic principles. He spoke right after the announcement of the life imprisonment verdict, but before the death sentence.
The sentence was based on politics, not the law, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavuşoğlu said June 16, as the ministry wanted Egypt to reverse the verdict. "There is no law, there is no justice," Çavuşoğlu said during a news conference broadcast live by the state-run TRT channel. "We weren't actually surprised ... to see such a political verdict from a regime like that," he said. The Foreign Ministry condemned the decision in a statement.
