EU interior ministers discuss migration, terrorism

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) EU interior ministers met in Luxembourg Tuesday and discussed recently announced European Migration Agenda and its related proposals, following tragic incidents in the Mediterranean which caused loss of hundreds of lives last April.

They also exchanged views on the implementation of measures regarding the fight against terrorism in Europe.

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, Lativan interior ninister Rihards Kozlovskis, whose country holds the current EU Presdiency said "today a common understanding was reached among delegations that we need to provide support to those frontline memberstates who are facing the greatest migratory pressure.

"At the same time it must be recognized that different views continue to exist about the details of the Commission's proposals for relocation of asylum seekers. We still have work to do to reach an agreement that can be implemented in practice. The solution must be practical," he added.

On his part, EU Commissioner for home affairs Dimitris Avramopoulos told the joint press conference that that "more than 100,000 people have arrived at our southern borders since the beginning of the year and they continue to come.

"Today I repeated to the ministers what I have been saying in the last few weeks. The European agenda on migration is a finely balanced package. I am pleased to see that member states agree on the principles but words are not enough. Now is the moment for actions. We should waste any more time. We must rise to the occasion and deliver results," he added.

The ministers discussed the implementation of the measures set out in the counter-terrorism statement issued by EU Heads of State or Government in February following the terrorist attacks on European soil. Ministers took stock of progress and exchanged views on how to take forward the agreed priorities, said an EU Presidency statement.
