(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US Senate voted 78 to 21 to ban the practice of enhanced torture on terror suspects and other US detainees held by any government agency.
"We must continue to insist that the methods we employ in this fight for peace and freedom must always, always, be as right and honorable as the goals and ideals we fight for," said Republican Senator John McCain who authored part of the amendment and was a prisoner of war for over 5 years in Vietnam.
The measure keeps prisoners from being subject to water boarding, "rectal feeding" and other extreme practices.
The amendment would codifiy into law an executive order by President Barack Obama created in 2009 and expand the scope of a 2005 law that limited only the Pentagon from such practices.
The 21 votes against the amendment were all Republicans.
