US- Struggling Padres fire manager Bud Black

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The San Diego Padres fired manager Bud Black after eight-plus seasons and a lackluster start to the 2015 campaign, the Major League Baseball team said on Monday.

The Padres, currently sitting third in the National League West with a record of 32-33, will immediately begin a search for an interim manager for the remainder of the 2015 season, the team said in a statement.

Black, who was named the NL's manager of the year in 2010, went 649-713 during his tenure and failed to get the club into the postseason.

San Diego had expected to be a contender in the NL West division but instead have been hovering around .500 and are six games out of first place.

Bench coach Dave Roberts will guide the team until a decision on an interim is named. Meanwhile, the Padres placed outfielder Wil Myers back on the 15-day disabled list and recalled right-hander Cory Mazzoni from Triple-A El Paso.

Myers, 24, is back on the list with the same issue-tendinitis in his left wrist-that sidelined him for 28 games until he returned last Thursday.

The New York Mets designated right-hander Dillon Gee for assignment and dropped him from the roster.

When Gee was on the disabled list with a groin strain last month, rookie Noah Syndergaard was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas. Syndergaard was effective enough to hold on to that rotation spot when Gee returned.

Mets third baseman David Wright could be recovered enough from his back problem to rejoin the team by the All-Star break.

Wright, the Mets' captain, has been out since April 15. He originally went
on the disabled list with a hamstring injury, then injured his back. He was later diagnosed with spinal stenosis, which has kept him off the field.
