Indonesia's trade surplus hits USD950m in May

(MENAFN) Indonesia's data continues to show positive signs, with the country's current account narrowing and a surplus hitting USD950 million in May, more than the USD410 million expected, Gulf News reported.

But the surplus stopped partly from May's tumble in imports, which economists said reflects weak domestic demand before Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month that starts this week.

The May surplus marked the sixth in a row, and took this year's accumulated surplus to USD3.75 billion, and that should help Indonesia have a significantly smaller second-quarter current account deficit on-year.

But in May, exports and imports both fell more than expected, and for the eighth straight month. For imports, May's plunge was the second straight month of more than 20 percent.
