Italy criticizes France for denying entry for immigrants

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi criticized France Monday for banning entry of immigrants at border crossings in what appeared to be failure to abide by European obligations, threatening of unilateral measures.

Renzi, at a joint news conference with his Mexican counterpart Enrique Pena Nieto, said the influx of immigrants to the Italian coasts "is a complex problem." He said Italy would not allow France to send its ships in the Mediterranean to save the illegal immigrants and only Italy would be carrying their burden.

Renzi said Europe was at a cross-road, "either it think as a group or face the problem collectively." He warned that Italy would be forced to carry the burden alone and continued to salvage hundreds of illegal immigrants.

Observers said Italy should first grant the illegal immigrants humanitarian residencies so other EU member countries would open their borders.
