Kurdish fighters recapture Tal Abyadh from ISIL


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), backed by other opposition armed groups, claimed full control over northern Tal Abyadh town, Ar-Raqqah governorate, on borders with Turkey on Monday after fierce battles against Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL).

The Free Syrian Army (FSA) and warplanes of the international coalition backed the offensive against ISIL, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported, noting that ISIL holds small pockets in the western and southwestern parts of the town.

At least 40 ISIL militants were killed by coalition airstrikes while trying to flee to Ain Isa village, to the northwest of Ar-Raqqah city.

The YPG and allied groups who encircled Tal Abyadh over the last two days continued their drive deep into the ISIL-controlled areas through the border crossing, according to a SOHR night update.

In a related development a missile attack on the residential areas in Aleppo city killed 23 people and wounded nearly 100 others, including many children, the state-run SANA news agency reported, citing local medical sources.

Meanwhile, the opposition Syria Mubasher news network (SLN) said the opposition groups used missile batteries to bombard the barracks of the regular troops inside Al-Thaala airbase, on the western rural outskirts of As-Suwayda city, south Damascus.

The southern font of the FSA said its fighters made big pushes towards the military airport and fierce fighting is still going on.

The opposition fighters destroyed a military convoy while heading to the airport to reinforce the regular troops there, according to the SLN.

Brigades 12 and 175 of the regular army in Izraa in the southern governorate of Daraa came under missile attacks while 40 military personnel, including seven officers, have reportedly defected from the regime on the rural outskirts of Quneitra city, southwest Syria.
