(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar University (QU) has announced that it has achieved membership of the United Nations (UN) Academic Impact.

The organisation was recognised by the UN Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, Cristina Gallach, for its commitment to 10 principles, according to a statement.

These are commitment to the UN Charter, human rights, educational opportunity for all, higher education opportunity for every interested individual, capacity-building in higher education systems, global citizenship, peace and conflict resolution, addressing poverty, sustainability, and the "unlearning" of intolerance.

The organisation joins over 1,000 colleges and universities in some 120 countries that are working with the UN to promote global priorities.

As stated on its website, the Academic Impact - themed "Sharing a Culture of Intellectual Social Responsibility" - is a global initiative that aligns institutions of higher education with the UN in furthering the realisation of the purposes and mandate of the organisation through activities and research in a shared culture of intellectual social responsibility.

Membership to the Impact is open to all institutions of higher education granting degrees or their equivalent, as well as bodies whose substantive responsibilities relate to the conduct of research.
