Qatar University gets new president


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Dr Hassan Rashid al-Derham has been appointed as the new president of Qatar University. He succeeds Dr Sheikha Abdullah al-Misnad who assumed the post in 2003.

Dr al-Derham was appointed at the fourth meeting of Qatar University's Board of Regents, which was chaired by HH the Deputy Emir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad al-Thani yesterday.

The Deputy Emir is also the Chairman of Qatar University's Board of Regents.

Dr al-Derham has held the post of vice-president for research at QU since June 2007, according to information on the university's website. Before that he served in several positions at QU including associate vice-president for research and head of Civil Engineering.

Dr al-Derham holds a PhD and Post Graduate Diploma in Construction Project Management from University of Glamorgan, UK. He has a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, in the US. His Bachelor Degree is in Architectural Engineering from North Carolina Agriculture and Technical State University, US.

Dr al-Derham played a major role in establishing the research agenda at both national and university level. During his term, the research policies and procedures, research priorities and road map for QU were adopted and implemented.

Several research centres were initiated under his leadership including: Qatar Mobility Innovation Centre, Laboratory Animals Research Centre, Biomedical Research Centre and Gas Processing Centre.

Dr al-Derham's research interests include: construction productivity, project optimisation, legal contracts and procurement. In 2009, together with his research team, Dr al-Derham won the best paper of the year in ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management.

He is also a member of several professional international societies and organisations.
