Oman- New Salalah Airport starts operations


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The new Salalah Airport started operations on Monday with the arrival of an Oman Air flight from Muscat as shifting of air traffic from the old airport to the new one began.

The airport will be officially commissioned in November to coincide with the sultanate's 45th National Day celebrations.

The new Salalah Airport is an important landmark in the governorate of Dhofar said Dr Mohammed bin Nasser al Zaabi CEO of Public Authority for Civil Aviation. It is also a valuable addition to the economic and tourism development projects being carried out all over the sultanate he added.

The new airport has latest facilities. It has 30 counters and ten checkout gates. With a passenger terminal spread over 65000sq m it is expected to handle 2mn passengers every year. Its 4km long and 75m wide runway can receive bigger aircraft including the Airbus A380.

In addition the airport is equipped with the latest air navigation and automatic landing system as per international standards and regulations. The 57m high control tower is equipped with modern systems and technologies.

The airport has been designed to provide high quality services and has retail outlets and restaurants. It also includes a VIP lounge in addition to a car park that can accommodate 2200 vehicles.
