UN condemns storming of Tunisian Consultate in Libya, seizure of 10 staff


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The UN Sunday strongly condemned the storming of armed groups of the Tunisian Consulate in Tripoli and seizure of 10 staff members, calling for their immediate release.

UN Secretary General's Special Representative for Libya Bernardino Leon condemned the attack and seizure of the 10 staff, calling for "immediate and unconditional release of the abducted staff.

Leon, also Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), recalled in a statement the principle of inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises must be respected.

He calls all Libyan actors with influence on the ground to do their utmost to ensure the safe release of the Tunisian staff and the protection of diplomatic missions in Libya.

An armed group stormed the Tunisian consulate on Friday. The Tunisian foreign ministry said the attack was a blatant breach of national sovereignty.

"This unacceptable act is a further reminder of the chaos engulfing Libya and the need for Libyans to end the ongoing conflict and to move quickly towards reaching a political agreement that would restore security and stability to their country," said Leon.

Internationally-recognized Libyan authorities condemned the attack, holding the militias contorlling Tripoli responsible for the safety of the abductees.
