U.S. "deeply concerned" by Bashir's travel to S. Africa

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The United States is "deeply concerned" by Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir's travel to South Africa for the African Union summit, State Department spokesman John Kirby said.

Bashir has been indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of crimes against humanity and genocide, and warrants for his arrest remain outstanding, Kirby noted in a statement released by the department, late on Sunday.

"While the United States is not a party to the Rome Statute, which sets out the crimes falling within the jurisdiction of the ICC, we strongly support international efforts to hold accountable those responsible for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes," Kirby said.

"In light of the atrocities in Darfur, we call on the government of South Africa to support the international community's efforts to provide justice for the victims of these heinous crimes," he said.
