EU, US condemn Luxor attack


(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) The European Union and the United States Embassy issued statements on Thursday condemning Wednesday's Luxor suicide attack and stating they stand with the Egyptian government in its "fight against terrorism".

On Wednesday morning, militants detonated a car bomb near the Al-Karnak Temple in Luxor. According to the Ministry of Health, two of the militants died.

A third militant was injured during the exchange of fire between security forces and the militants. Two police officers were also injured.The Ministries of Interior and Antiquities both denied tourists were injured.
"The EU will keep supporting Egypt's efforts to tackle violent extremism and prevent new attacks. We extend our sympathies to those wounded," the EU statement said.

Meanwhile the US embassy also condemned an attack on the Multinational Force and Observers mission (MFO) base in North Sinai.

"The United States continues to stand with the Egyptian government and people in the ongoing fight against terrorism," the US statement read.

The Ministry of Tourism has increased its security measures at tourist sites following the attack, Minister of Tourism Khaled Rami said on Wednesday.

"We continue to take every possible measure to ensure that no harm comes to anyone visiting Egypt," said Rami.
