South Korea: Total number of MERS patients increases to 145

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) South Korea has reported another death from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, MERS, on Sunday, along with seven new cases that brings the total number of MERS patients so far to 145.

A 61-year-old man died on Sunday afternoon while receiving treatment at a hospital in the southern port city of Busan, the Yonhap news agency of South Korea has reported, quoting a city official.

The latest victim is believed to have come down with the virus after visiting a relative at Samsung Medical Centre in southern Seoul, who had been sharing the same hospital ward with a MERS patient at the time.

Busan city officials said the man did not have any other special health conditions, aside from having weak liver function.

The latest fatality has pushed up the number of MERS-related deaths to 15 since the respiratory illness was first confirmed in the country on May 20th.

Of the seven new patients confirmed earlier Sunday, four were infected while visiting or being treated at Samsung Medical Centre, according to the Health and Welfare Ministry.

The hospital has been identified as a major source of infection as nearly half of those diagnosed with the respiratory illness are believed to have been infected while visiting the hospital in the capital.
