Belgians may 'lose citizenship for fighting in Syria'

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The Belgian government has proposed a law to invalidate passports and identity cards of citizens it suspects of going abroad to fight with extremist groups in Syria or Iraq, Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon said Friday.

"There are indications that [more] people are planning to go and fight in Syria," Jambon told reporters at a news conference in Brussels Friday.

The law, which was proposed by the Belgian government Friday, will need the approval of the Belgian parliament.

According to the International Centre for the Study of Radicalization and Political Violence, around 300 people left Belgium in the two years up to December 2014 to fight in Syria.
