Qatar- Workshops educate diabetics on safer fasting during holy month

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Action on Diabetes, in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA), held workshops to educate patients with diabetes to better manage their condition and ensure safer fasting during Ramadan.

The first event at Women's Hospital, a member of HMC, last week was for expectant mothers with diabetes. More than 30 women attended the workshop led by Dr Buthaina Al Owainati, a leading consultant at HMC.

The practical session covered many topics, advice and recommendations on how to manage diabetes during Ramadan and tips and recommendations from Action on Diabetes health practitioners.

On Wednesday, Action on Diabetes organised a similar event at Radisson Blu Hotel in Doha, in collaboration with Qatar Diabetes Association. It educated a broader group of diabetics on precautions while fasting and how to safely manage their condition and medication during the holy month.

Action on Diabetes advises diabetics planning to fast to speak to a consultant or physician beforehand about the most suitable medication or dietary plans.

Patients are also advised to monitor their blood sugar levels, maintain a healthy and balanced diet and, where possible, engage in moderate physical activity such as stretching and walking.

These workshops were part of an ongoing programme of education, awareness and screening being organised by Action on Diabetes in the run-up to and during Ramadan.

For questions or enquiries during Ramadan, contact Qatar Diabetes Association hotline 44547311 or 55274919 from 8.30am until 1.30pm. For medication instruction or details, contact Hamad Medical Corporation and Primary Health Care hotline 55981331 from 8pm until 11pm.
