WHO: South Korea MERS Situation "Large and Complex"

(MENAFN- QNA) The outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in South Korea is "large and complex" and more cases should be expected, Keiji Fukuda, the World Health Organization's (WHO) assistant director general, told a news conference at Seoul's Health Ministry.

"Because the outbreak has been large and is complex, more cases should be anticipated," said Fukuda.

The virus has infected 138 people in South Korea and killed 14 of them since the first case was reported on May 20 in a businessman who had returned from a trip to the Middle East.

Fukuda said however that he was encouraged that South Korea's control measures were having an impact.

MERS belongs to the same family as the one that caused SARS but is deadlier. It does not spread as easily but there is no cure or vaccine for it.
