(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Research Centre for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), a member of Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) recently held a seminar on "Islamic Ethics and Gender Issues" in St Antony's College, University of Oxford.
The seminar dealt with developing ethical research in the field of gender issues from theoretical and applied approaches. The participants looked at ways to develop an ethical referential framework for gender issues, based on the texts and objectives of Shariah, in addition to analysing the Philosophical Foundations adopted by contemporary feminism.
The speakers also tackled contemporary experiences and applications in the field of gender issues, with special reference to Islamic approaches to the issue of rights and duties, differences in some legal rulings for men and women, and comparisons between the different opinions and approaches to reform in family law.
Dr Mawahib Bakr, CILE Business Support Manager who holds a PhD in Gender Studies from York University in Canada, moderated the seminar. A group of prominent scholars of Islamic Theology and experts in Gender and Feminist Studies participated in the event.
They included Dr Sheikh Mohamed El Tahir El Mesawi, Associate Professor at Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences at International Islamic University of Malaysia; Dr Ziba Mir Hosseini, Professorial Research Associate at the Centre for Islamic and Middle Eastern Law, University of London; Dr Muthanna Amin Nader, Head of the Kurdistan Islamic Union bloc in the Iraqi Parliament; Dr Ruqaia Taha Jabir Al Alwani, Associate Professor at the University of Bahrain; Dr Terrell Carver, Professor of Political Theory at the University of Bristol, UK; Dr Farida Zommoroud, Professor of Quranic Interpretation and Sciences at Dar Al Hadith Al Hassania for Higher Islamic Studies in Morocco; Dr Serene Jones, 16th President of the historic Union Theological Seminary, New York and President-elect of the American Academy of Religion; Dr Tariq Ramadan, CILE Executive Director and Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies, University of Oxford; and Chauki Lazhar, CILE Deputy Director.
