Paradox of politics

(MENAFN- Arab News) One may call it the doom of democracy as every time a new government takes over it overturns the policies howsoever important of the previous one. And nowhere this is as much visible as it is in the largest democracy of the world India. Even within the same party the discord and differences among the members are sharp.

Take for example the issue of India-Bangladesh land deal. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had once remarked that there was no question of conceding any part of the Indian land to Bangladesh.

But his own Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently made history by agreeing to a land deal with his counterpart Sheikh Hasina when he visited Dhaka. This same Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) never allowed the Congress Party when the latter was in power to do so.

Under the Land Boundary Agreement signed between the two countries a total of 162 enclaves have been swapped with 111 enclaves being transferred to Bangladesh and 51 to India.

This has facilitated the people of those lands to decide to choose citizenship of their choice. Till now their fate was hanging in balance. By doing this Modi has helped settle the border land issue which was pending for a long time and strengthened the relationship between the two countries. Anees Lokhande Alkhobar
