Well done Turkey

(MENAFN- Arab News) In the political history of Turkey June 8 proved a great day for democracy; it proved beyond any doubt that it's the century of people and the time for authoritarianism is over.

It is said that if ever religious elements rise to the power by vote they start behaving as 'the chosen one' by God to rule the people. Egypt's former President Mohammed Mursi tried to put everything on his plate and not only burned his fingers but soon fell along with his plate.

Apparently Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan hasn't learned any lesson from the downfall of Mursi and went ahead with his 'Neo-Ottomanism.' June 8 election results proved you can't fool all the people.

Regardless of Erdogan's failure to re-write the constitution to help elevate him as a formal sultan entry of Kurdish-based People's Democratic Party (HDP) in Turkish politics is the real game changer. One may expect that all the liberal forces in Turkey will get together to prevent re-emergence of emperors. Turks have proved to the world that democracy shall be the government of the people by the people and for the people no space for veiled democratic dictators.

Congratulations Turkey for standing for the values that Turkey strived for. Masood Khan Jubail
