Arab Group rejects Israeli request to join COPUOS

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Arab Group in Vienna has expressed rejection to the Israeli request aiming to join the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), saying the request runs counter to the committee's peaceful action.

On the sidelines of the 58th session of the committee currently held in Vienna, some Arab diplomatic sources told KUNA on Thursday that some Arab delegations, including Kuwait, affirmed that Israel seeks to help its mostly military industrial companies benefit from the committee's activities.

The sources also refused the idea to allow Israel to organize a workshop on social and economic technology of space scheduled on October 11 in Jerusalem.

The sources attributed the rejection to the fact that Jerusalem is currently under the Israeli occupation, noting the Arab Group in Vienna agreed to coordinate with the Arab Group in New York on this issue to tell UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon about their total opposition to this workshop.

The COPUOS was set up by the UN General Assembly in 1959 to govern the exploration and use of space for the benefit of all humanity: for peace, security and development.

The committee was tasked with reviewing international cooperation in peaceful uses of outer space, studying space-related activities that could be undertaken by the United Nations, encouraging space research programs, and studying legal problems arising from the exploration of outer space.
