EP committee wants closer engagement with GCC

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Thursday urged the EU to boost its influence in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to spur political and economic stability, because of its strategic importance to Europe and its security.

The committee in a resolution also called for stronger EU engagement with the regional actors such as the e Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), League of Arab States and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the crisis resolution.

It said the international community and MENA governments must do more to prevent financing of terrorism, including through efficient system of penalties to stop the financing of ISIL and the commercialisation of illegally produced oil.

EU member states must increase their mobilisation in military, logistical, financial and humanitarian spheres in addressing the conflicts in the MENA region, it said and called for better coordination of their efforts, namely in fighting ISIL.

The EU should become the main facilitator of a regional dialogue involving all regional stakeholders, and must also step-up its engagement in the stalled Middle East Peace process, it stressed.

It noted that the recruitment capacity of ISIL and Al-Nustra Front are fuelled by the economic, political, social and cultural crisis affecting the region and stressed the need for EU support in finding a sustainable solution to them to effectively neutralise ISIL.

The resolution, drafted by French MEP Vincent Peillon , was adopted by the Foreign Affairs Committee by 45 votes to 10. It will be put to a vote by the whole EP when in meets in July.
