GCC appreciates Kuwaiti, Saudi humanitarian support to Yemen

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Foreign Ministers have lauded Kuwait's USD 100 million donation, and a Saudi initiative offering USD 274 million for supporting humanitarian activities in Yemen.

The 135th meeting of the GCC Ministerial Council held in Riyadh on Thursday also commended humanitarian aid to Yemen by other member states, as well as the Riyadh-based King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Work.

In a final statement, the ministers welcomed the outcome of a May Riyadh conference on "Saving Yemen and Building a Federal State," that emphasized support to legitimacy, security and stability of the country.

They called for completing the political process in Yemen, based on the GCC Initiative, the outcome of the comprehensive Yemeni National Dialogue and the UNSC resolution No. 2216.

They welcomed the UN efforts to convene a Geneva meeting on Yemen, on June 14.

On Iraq, the Council reaffirmed backing to the Iraqi government's efforts to realize national reconciliation, as well as in the fight against the terrorist Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Referring to Libya, the foreign ministers, reiterated support to the "elected parliament," the legitimate government and the UN efforts seeking to resume the comprehensive dialogue among the Libyan stakeholders.

Meanwhile, the GCC called upon the international community, especially the UNSC and the world civil society organizations to work harder for finding a speedy solution to the calamity of the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar, in line with the resolutions of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the UN and the principles of human rights.

As for Syria, the statement voiced support to efforts by the UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura to find a political solution to the crisis based on Geneva I, in a way that guarantees Syria's security, stability and territorial integrity, and realizes the expectations of the Syrian people.

The GCC called for joining international efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to the afflicted Syrian people, lauding the outcome the Third International Humanitarian Pledging Conference Kuwait hosted in March.

In the meantime, the 135th GCC ministerial meeting denounced and rejected recent statements by Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei against Bahrain.

It referred to Khamenei's statements at a Tehran conference in May as fallacies, and falsifications of facts, running against acknowledged principles of international relations and law and Islam as well as good neighborly ties.

By the same token, the ministers denounced recent statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in which he announced plans to build more settlements in Jerusalem, confiscating the rights of Arabs and Muslims in the Holy City.

They welcomed Palestine's membership in the International Criminal Court (ICC) saying it is likely to enhance its status on the international scene and help preserve the rights of the Palestinian people.
