Six die after ferry capsizes in Bangladesh

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) At least six people were killed Thursday after a river ferry capsized in southern Bangladesh with more than 60 people on board, police said.

The boat overturned in Meghna River near Monpura in the coastal Bhola
district, nearly 200 kilometres south of Dhaka, during a rainstorm,
Hanif Sikder, a senior official of Monpura sub-district, told dpa by
phone.

Local fishermen and rescuers from the firefighting department
retrieved the bodies of six passengers, including four children, he
said.

Members of the coastguard were called in to search for nearly 20
people still missing, he added.

Most passengers of the ferry, which was en route to Monpura from a
coastal island, managed to swim ashore with the help of local
fishermen, Sikder said.
