GCC info. ministers agree to back Qatar hosting of '22 World Cup


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The GCC information ministers renewed their call for the mass media in their countries to counter the attempts to cast doubts on Qatar's right to host the 2022 World Cup.

Wrapping up their 23rd meeting here late Wednesday, the ministers adopted recommendations stressing GCC states full solidarity with the State of Qatar and encouraged media in the GCC to continue countering these campaigns at home and abroad.

The ministers reminded the media outlets in their countries of their duty to highlight the cultural and economic gains of this unprecedented event and its positive impacts on the youth and sports movement in GCC states, according to QNA news agency.

They agreed that the State of Qatar, in coordination with the GCC General Secretariat, is to develop a strategic vision for the joint media moves to counter such campaigns to reflect the international dimension of media discourse to show the right of GCC state, represented by the State of Qatar, to organize this important event.

With regard to foreign media, the ministers approved the recommendations of the 29th Foreign Media Officials' meeting. They also agreed to arrange the media activities of the GCC States and the General Secretariat in relation to the world fairs, starting with Expo Milano 2015, and assigned the Foreign Media Officials Committee to coordinate with the competent authorities in each country in this regard.

On electronic media, the ministers approved the General-Secretariat's memorandum on the recommendations of the electronic media officials 5th meeting.

Regarding radio cooperation, they appreciated the radio stations in the GCC countries for their efforts in the coverage of the annual celebration marking the 34th anniversary of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

The ministers appreciated the efforts of the Bahraini Information Affairs Authority to develop the Arabian Gulf Radio which focuses on the events and issues of the GCC states. They underlined the need for assigning broadcasting frequencies for the Arabian Gulf radio in all GCC countries.

On television cooperation, the ministers thanked the TV stations in the GCC countries for their efforts in the coverage of the annual celebration of the 34th anniversary of the Cooperation Council's foundation.

Regarding media cooperation with Jordan, they reviewed the General-Secretariat's relevant memorandum, and agreed to refer recommendations thereon to GCC joint media committees.

The ministers also discussed anti-tobacco actions and agreed on a host of

measures to ban tobacco advertising in the media.

Regarding the next meeting of GCC information ministers, the ministers welcomed the invitation extended by Saudi Arabia's Minister of Culture and Information Dr. Adel bin Zaid Al-Turaifi to the ministers to hold their 24th meeting in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the assigning of the General-Secretariat to coordinate for setting the appropriate date of the meeting in the first half of 2016.

Concluding their meeting, the ministers expressed thanks to the chairman of the meeting Sheikh Hamad bin Thamir Al Thani, to all the employees of Qatar Media Corporation for the warm hospitality and to the General-Secretariat for the good preparation for the meeting.

The ministers sent a cable of thanks Qatari Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for the care and attention he paid to their meeting and the warm hospitality accorded to the delegations which contributed to the success of the meeting.
The ministers also sent a cable of thanks and appreciation to the Deputy Amir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani for the wise directives to the ministers of information when they met him and which will enhance the drive of GCC joint media action.

The ministers sent a cable of thanks and appreciation to the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani for the warm hospitality and honoring accorded to the delegations and for the wise directives he gave to the information ministers during when he met them Minister of Information Sheikh Salman Sabah Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah led Kuwait's delegation to the meeting.
