EP rejects report on energy security strategy

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The European Parliament's full session Wednesday rejected the draft report which called for increased energy security and reduced independence on imported fossil fuels.

The text was rejected with 315 votes to 277.

"After today's plenary vote we can only regret that there is not enough political will to have an EU energy security strategy. That also shows that the way to create an Energy Union will be long and difficult", said rapporteur of the report Algirdas Saudargas after the vote.

The Group of Liberals and Democrats in the EP in a statement said "today's result was hugely disappointing.

For the Parliament to reject a report of this significance is very worrying and casts doubt over our ability to move forward with ambition on the big issues that matter to European citizens." "This is of particular concern, as the crisis in Ukraine has rightly reminded the European Union of the importance of energy security. We have to try to break our dependence on Russian gas," it said.
