Qatar among top 10 for fixed line Internet speeds

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Akamai 'State of the Internet' Report has named Qatar one of the fastest-rising countries for fixed line Internet speeds in the world, following Ooredoo's Internet speed boost last year.

The report ranked Qatar No. 8 in the global top 10, offering average peak connection speeds of 62.8 Mbps, a 72 percent year-on-year increase.

It attributes the incredible rise to Ooredoo's free speed upgrade last October, which saw customers on 1 Mbps plans boosted to 10 Mbps and those on 10 Mbps plans upgraded to 25 Mbps.

Qatar ranked among top 10 nations for global average peak connection speeds for the first time, displacing Luxembourg. The report says Ooredoo's ongoing fibre upgrades contributed significantly to a sharp rise in broadband connectivity in Qatar, with a 282 percent rise of high-speed adoption rates in the last quarter of 2014. In addition to boosting speeds for all 1Mbps and 10Mbps home fibre plans, Ooredoo doubled upload speeds for fibre customers during the period.

Sheikh Saud bin Nasser Al Thani, CEO, Ooredoo Qatar, said: "We are striving to make Qatar the best-connected country in the world, and the report shows the qualitative impact Ooredoo is having on Internet speeds and adoption across the country.

"Customers in Qatar know that Ooredoo offers the biggest, fastest network, and the report demonstrates the strides we have taken in terms of average peak connection speeds and adoption rates on a global scale".

Since its launch in 2011, Ooredoo's fibre network has provided advantages for customers, including incredible upload and download speeds, access to a fully-digital crystal clear voice network and Next Generation Mozaic TV with high-definition programming and advanced features.
