EU rejects new Greek proposals on economic reform

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The EU Wednesday rejected new proposals presented by the Greek government to the EU on Tuesday on economic reforms in the country.

European Commission Chief Spokesperson Margaritis Schinas told a news conference that the EU Commissioner for economic affairs Pierre Moscovici informed the Greek government representatives yesterday afternoon that their latest suggestions "do not reflect the state of discussions between the Greek Prime Minister (Alexis Tsipras) and European Commission President (Jean-Claude) Juncker." "Technical work continues in order to try to breach the differences between the different positions and to create the conditions for an unanimous agreement between all 19 members of the Eurozone," he noted.

"For this final push, the European Commission is of the view that the ball is now in the court of the Greek government which needs to follow up on the agreement at the meeting with President Juncker last Wednesday," he said.

The spokesman hinted that Juncker will not meet Tsipras who is attending a summit of EU-Latin American leaders in Brussels today and tomorrow.

The European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund want Greece to implement more unpopular economic reforms before they release 7.2 billion euro in bailout funds.

Last Friday, Greece delayed a payment of 300 million euro to the IMF until the end of June when a total of 1.5 billion euro is due to be paid.
