Saudi economy records USD44b remittances in 2014

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia enjoyed the most amount of remittances in 2014, recording approximately USD44 billion, followed by the United Arab Emirates with USD29 billion, Arab News reported.

Remittances constitute the amount of cash sent by foreign workers (expats) to their home countries. The number of listed expats in Saudi reaches 10 million, according to estimates.

All in all, remittances in the Gulf region were recorded at USD100 billion in total last year, according to an economic report. The figure doubled from the number recorded back in 2010.

"Remittances offer a low hanging fruit to GCC governments to implement strategies that can stem and reverse the flow," the report read.
