Dubai - A 21-year-old student faced charges on Monday for allegedly assaulting a delivery man and setting his bike on fire.

The Emirati student is believed to have punched the Bangladeshi delivery man several times in the face when he came across him in Al Qusais.

He has been charged in the Court of First Instance with arson and physical assault. The incident allegedly happened on May 4.

The complainant a 34-year-old man said in the prosecution investigation that he was on his way to drop off a delivery packet at a house in Oud Al Muttaina at around 11.30am when the accused stopped him. “He grabbed me by the shirt and pulled me off my bike. He punched me several times in the face for no reason and took the ignition key”.

The defendant then allegedly told the man to give him all the money he had with him. “I somehow managed to break free from him and ran to hide behind a tree”.

The complainant then saw the accused putting a burning matchstick inside the bike’s fuel tank.

The defendant then fled the scene after he set the bike on fire. A police corporal quoted the accused as alleging that he assaulted the victim after the latter tried to bump into him.

The corporal also quoted the defendant as admitting to have set the bike on fire.

The student was taken into police custody. Another police corporal quoted the defendant as admitting to have burned the bike.

“The student claimed the victim drove his bike in as if he was trying to show-off in front of him and that irritated him” the corporal told the prosecutor. A verdict will be pronounced on July 9.
