(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Prosecutors in Belgium Monday ordered a series of raids in the country in an attempt to clamp down on terrorism, especially in Chechen circles, Belgian media reported.
Twenty-one premises were searched and 16 people have been held. The raids took place in two terrorist investigations into two separate groups, which admittedly were connected to each other.
In the investigation in the region of west Flanders, the investigating judge arrested two suspects, and an arrest warrant will be issued against three others in absentia. The other arrested persons were released after interrogation, the media reported.
Police had received information that a person might have participated in
the city of Ostend in the fighting in Syria.
The police also targeted a group of four Chechens from the Leuven region. The prosecutor demanded an investigation into their possible involvement "in plotting an attack in Belgium."
