New round of Libya dialogue start in Morocco

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The fifth round of the Libyan dialogue kicked off in Skhirat resort, west Morocco, Monday night under the supervision of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

The UN Special Representative and UNSMIL's Head Bernardino Leon, Moroccan Minister Delegate to the Ministry of of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Mbarka Bouaida and President of the House of Councillors Rashid Al-Elmi attended the opening session.

Unlike the previous rounds of talks, Leon, who leads the mediation efforts, was able to bring representatives of the Libyan belligerent parties to the negotiating table face to face which signaled a good will by the participants to reach a peaceful settlement to the crisis in Libya.

He tabled to the representatives of the Tripoli based General National Congress and the UN-recognized Tobruk-based parliament as well as civil society institutions a UN-backed draft proposal for settlement.

The negotiators are scheduled to head to Berlin on Tuesday midday to meet foreign ministers of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council before coming back to Skhirat to resume the talks on Thursday.
