Qatari Minister outlines growth prospects and future projects

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The State of Qatar reviewed prospects for economic growth and future development projects, during an economic conference organised by Chatham House in London.

Ministers and senior officials from Arab States and international economic organisations are participating in the two-day conference which started in London yesterday under the title Middle East and North Africa Economies, Diversification, Growth and Employment.

In a speech during the opening session of the conference, HE the Minister of Development Planning and Statistics Dr Saleh bin Mohamed al-Nabit reviewed a number of facts and economic data in addition to the state's efforts for economic diversification.

"The contribution of non-oil sector in GDP in the State of Qatar has been increasing for the past five years, which is considered a very important economic indicator, especially in the Gulf region, where most of the economies depend on oil and its financial returns," the minister added.

"The private sector recorded strong growth in Qatar, and is still growing, while enjoying distinct opportunities to participate effectively in national development," he said.

The minister revealed the initiatives being worked out in the education sector in Qatar, including universities.

"The government aims, by supporting universities, to produce greater knowledge and better skills among graduates, he said.

Economic diversification requires making several institutional changes, said HE Dr Al Nabit, pointing to the strategy pursued by the State of Qatar in the field of development.

During his speech, he gave a short presentation on the structure of development planning in the country, including Qatar Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2011-2016.
