(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Omani athletes wrapped up their disappointing campaign at the 21st Asian Athletics Championship in the Chinese city of Wuhan on Sunday failing to collect a single medal.

On the concluding day of the championship on Sunday the Omani quartet of Ahmed al Marjabi Othman al Busaidi Mohammed al Hindi and Ahmed al Saadi finished last in the 4x400m race with a time of 3m05.94s. Qatar took the gold in 3m02.50s while the Saudi Arabians won the silver in 3m02.62s. Japan came third (3m03.47s) while India and Sri Lanka finished ahead of Oman.

In the other event on Sunday Khalid al Ghailani the only Omani to qualify for the 200m final ended last in the race with a time of 21.34s. Qatar's Ogunode clinched a grand double winning the 200m in a time of 20.32s.

Earlier on Thursday Ogunode bettered his own Asian record in the 100m event when he won the gold in a time of 9.91s - 0.02 seconds faster than the time he had set at the Asian Games in Incheon South Korea last year.

Oman's ace sprinter Barakat al Harthy who had qualified for the 100m final failed to make it to the top five as he came seventh (10.29s) only to pip Qatar's Francis Samuel Adelebari (10.31s) to the last spot. China's Zhang Peimeng (10.15s) and Iran's Reza Ghasemi (10.19s) took the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Barakat however suffered an injury on Friday after competing in the 200m preliminary round and failed to start in the semifinal. He had clocked 21.68s to advance along with Ghailani who had a time of 21.18s.

In the semifinal on Saturday Ghailani ran 20.95s for a place in the final which was better than the time he clocked in the final.

In the 4x100m relay final on Saturday Oman came seventh with the team of Hindi Barakat Abdullah al Sooli and Ghailani clocking 39.75s. China won the gold in 39.04s while Hong Kong took the silver in 39.35s.

Chinese Taipei bagged the bronze in 39.35s.

Jihad al Sheikh the head of the Omani delegation and the general secretary of the Oman Athletics Association said 'We were expecting a medal but the competition was tough. I hope our athletes gained experience from this meet and will deliver better results in the forthcoming GCC Games in Dammam Saudi Arabia in October.

'I am happy with Khalid's [al Ghailani] performance as he was making his debut and he achieved his career-best time in the 200m event. He qualified for the final from a tough field. He has a bright future.'
