Environment experts exchange ideas at key event in Jubail
(MENAFN- Arab News) JUBAIL: Presentations related to the sustainability and environment conservation of natural resources and on energy marked the World Environment Day 2015 (WED 15) organized by the Royal Commission for Jubail (RCJ).
The environmental safety and control department of the RCJ hosted the celebration of the WED 15 themed "Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care" held in the presence of RCJ CEO Mosleh Al-Otaibi.
The celebration aimed to gather environmental specialists for exchanging experiences in developed areas to instill a sense of responsibility among industrial companies in environment preservation raise environmental awareness as well as discuss the latest global and local technology to raise the level of environmental conservation in industrial areas and cities.
Al-Otaibi presented the RCJ awards for best environmental performance in basic industries (2014) to the Saudi Chevron Phillips Company (S-Kim) which ranked the first the National Methanol Company (Ibn Sina) the second and the National Industrialization Company (Tasnee) the third.
As for the secondary industries the Saudi Guardian International Float Glass Co. Ltd. (Gulf Guard) achieved the first rank the Universal Metal Coating Company Ltd. (Unicoil) the second and the Arabian Chemical Co. Ltd. (Latex) the third.
Al-Otaibi presented the RCJ Award to Jubail Petrochemical Company (Kimia) for being the best corporate sponsor of environmental activities in 2014 while the Saudi Iron and Steel Co. got the Environmental Initiative Award.
Owaid Al-Rasheedi director of the environmental safety and control department said: "The RCJ hosted this gathering attended by industry and scientific research experts and environment specialists."
Al-Rasheedi added that the concept of sustainable development is focused on the development of land cities and communities as well as businesses provided that they meet the present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
The world today faces a real challenge with a steady increase in population that has surpassed seven billion people he said adding that UN reports show that the world might exceed the ten-billion-barrier by the end of this century which means the increased need for water food and energy.
The RCJ has set an example and recommends optimal consumption of natural resources by encouraging all investments for recycling and energy conservation he said confirming that the RCJ's use of natural gas as fuel in industries aims to produce a smaller amount of carbon dioxide compared with other fuels in addition to the development of environmental and engineering requirements for all its projects to ensure environment preservation.
As a result of these efforts the RCJ was ranked first in the Arab Towns Organization (ATO) Award at its 12th session on environmental awareness competing with other 11 Arab cities.
