Trivandrum — Two Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers were killed and four others seriously injured on Saturday in a bomb explosion in Kerala’s northern district of Kannur.

The condition of two of the injured is reported to be critical. They have been rushed to the Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences Calicut. The deceased have been identified as Shaiju and Subhish.

Police said that the explosion had occurred while the six men were engaged in making bombs at a deserted area at Kallikkandi near Panur a hot spot of political hostility between the CPM and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Police have recovered a steel bomb and bomb making materials from the area. The bomb squad of the Kerala police are scanning the area and surrounding places.

State Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has sought a report from the Director General of Police. The DGP has directed northern range ADGP Shankar Reddy to rush to the area.

The incident occurred amid attempts by a peace committee set up by the district administration to end the political hostilities in the area which had become tense following the murder of a CPM worker there two months ago.

BJP general secretary M T Ramesh alleged that the incident was the result of attempts by the CPM to torpedo the peace initiatives. He alleged that the party was trying to mobilise bombs and other lethal weapons for confronting their political opponents.

Political tension has been rising in Kannur district which has gained notoriety as the killing fields of Kerala ever since the BJP launched its membership campaign after the party assumed power in New Delhi. Several CPM men had joined the BJP in the recent months.

BJP leaders say that the CPM workers were attacking those who deserted the party. They alleged that the CPM men had mounted about 100 attacks on their workers in the recent months.
