Oman goes down to Syria in friendly

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's preparations for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup Group D qualifier against hosts India on June 11 came under the spotlight when it lost 1-2 to a strong Syrian side at the Seeb Sports Stadium on Friday.

Both the teams are gearing up for their World Cup qualifiers which will also serve as the 2019 Asian Cup preliminary joint qualification round two.

Oday Jaffal opened the scoring for Syria after just seven minutes and Omar Khrebein converted a penalty 12 minutes later to double his side's lead.

After the break Oman's Ahmed Mubarak 'Kanu' squandered a chance to reduce the deficit when he failed to convert his 67th-minute penalty.

The Omanis' long-awaited goal finally came nine minutes before time when Syria's Alaa Shebly scored an own-goal.

Paul Le Guen's team will depart for the Indian city of Bengaluru on Monday to acclimatise with the weather and pitch conditions.

The match at the Sree Kanteerawa Stadium will kick off at 5.30pm Oman time.
