Saudi- Ramadan promotions lead to wasteful purchases

(MENAFN- Arab News) JEDDAH: With Ramadan approaching shops are in fierce competition with one another to lure customers with attractive product promotions and low prices often leading to increase in consumption by Saudi families during the holy month by up to 500 percent.
Economists and market experts have asked consumers to be wary of promotions while stocking for Ramadan as their shopping bills may overshoot family budgets by up to five times.
Mohammed Al-Qahtani described the increase in offers during Ramadan as 'confusing' and overwhelming to customers noting that many customers purchase more food than the family can consume in order to take advantage of the "low price" offers.
Um Yazan said: 'Housewives prefer to buy goods during Ramadan in large quantities which saves them time and effort during the fasting month.' Another customer Abu Saleh said customers tend to focus more on eating and shopping during Ramadan which should be a time for praying and worshipping.
Nayef Al-Sharif head of the food and beverage committee at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that the Ministry of Commerce has put an end to false offers by shops and will not allow them to offer promotions before obtaining a specific permit after providing a list of prices to the ministry for approval.
According to Habibullah Turkistani professor of economics and international marketing at King Abdulaziz University consumers are responsible for their actions and should rationalize purchases during Ramadan rather than be lured by promotions and temptations. He said the holy month of Ramadan is the month of worship and not a month of eating and consumption and that the media should run awareness programs about rational shopping practices of Ramadan-related goods.
Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Taif Salem Bajajh said shops compete by providing the best Ramadan offers to attract the largest number of consumers and sell large amounts of their products for profits noting that these increase the likelihood of purchases among households.
