India, Bangladesh sign historic land swap agreement

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina as he arrived in Dhaka on a two-day official visit.

Indian PM's Office said in a statement that the landmark Land Boundary Agreement was signed whereby both the countries will swap lands leading to put an end to 41 years of border disputes between the two Asian neighbors.

In addition, 22 other bilateral agreements were also signed to strengthen bilateral ties in the trade and transport sectors.

The leadership of Bangladesh had approved the Land Boundary Agreement way back in 1974 - three years after independence from Pakistan - but the Indian Parliament approved the same last month as it postponed for long a decision which would decide the future of thousands of people.

The people living in the settlements in border areas were not receiving any of the vital government services as both the governments hesitated to integrate or fully rejecting the residents in these settlements.

With the signing of this historic agreement and handing over the related documents, 111 settlements in the border would be handed over to Bangladesh while India will receive 55. This will help to find a permanent solution to the illegal migration across the four-thousand kilometers porous border by fixing a permanent border.

According to the statement from the PMO, Modi has promised to extend two billion dollars' credit line to the neighboring country and he is also expected to hold talks with the opposition leader Raushon Ershad and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

Modi is also slated to sign agreements in sector of power and an MoU to set up Free Trade Zones in Bangladesh by Indian companies as the neighboring country is considered an important trade partner as bilateral trade reached 3.34 billion dollars in 2012-2013.
