Qatari Widam fully equipped for the Holy month of Ramadan

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Widam Food Company has made necessary preparations for the upcoming Holy month of Ramadan by providing a strategic stock of Australian sheep as well as Arabian sheep, subsidised for Qataris by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC).

Abdulrahman Mohamed al-Khayarin, CEO of Widam, said at a press briefing yesterday that Widam has imported 60,000 heads of live Australian sheep. In addition, it has entered into a contract with a major company to supply 70,000 frozen carcasses of slaughtered Australian sheep, which will be sent by air from Australia on a daily basis.

Widam has also imported some live Australian bulls, which will be slaughtered at the company's slaughterhouses and sold to the public through its various outlets.

Al-Khayarin said Widam will import Indian and Pakistani mutton besides frozen Sudanese meat and Pakistani beef. He also announced a new initiative, whereby Widam would open the doors to purchase Syrian sheep from local ranches and farms in a bid to encourage local livestock producers.

The company will run the buying process from June 10 to 15. The sheep should be in good health, upon close veterinary check-up, and each head should not be less than 40kg.

The Widam CEO said during Ramadan, the company will provide 200,000 Australian sheep, 10,000 imported Syrian sheep, 10,000 locally raised Syrian sheep, 10,000 Jordanian sheep, 5,000 Indian buffaloes, 3,000 Pakistani buffaloes, 5,000 heads of Somali livestock and 5,000 Sudanese produce.

The subsidised sheep will be sold to Qataris from June 13 until the end of Ramadan at QR950 for local sheep of 40kg or above, QR950 for Syrian sheep of 40kg or above and QR850 for Jordanian sheep of 35kg or above. The MEC has provided around 30,000 heads of all such types to be sold until stock lasts during Ramadan.
