Calm Restored in South Tunisian City of Douz


(MENAFN- QNA) Calm was restored today in the city of Douz in Kebili governorate after renewed clashes between a number of young protesters in the city and security units for the third consecutive time.

An official security source in the governorate said in a statement today that five security guards were injured during the clashes which lasted until the late hours of the night.

Eyewitnesses said the protesters hurled stones and firecrackers at security units which used teargas to disperse them and prevent them from reaching and attacking the security headquarters.

The clashes were renewed last night despite to release of all detainees on the backlash of events that occurred in the city of Douz since last Tuesday.

One of the main demands of the protesters was the contribution of oil companies operating in the desert of the governorate to development and employment.

Protesters also attempted Tuesday to stage a sit-in near the gas production company field in Bir Al-Haj Ibrahim "Southern Douz but security units intervened to foil their attempt.
