Ghana Explosion Death Toll Rises to 90

(MENAFN- QNA) The number of people killed in a huge explosion at a petrol station in Accra, Ghana's capital has risen to 90.

The blast happened on Thursday as dozens of people sought shelter at the petrol station and in nearby shops in central Accra to escape the torrential rains.

The disaster raised anew concerns over the city's inadequate infrastructure.

The blast was caused by a fire that erupted at a nearby lorry terminal then spread to the petrol station and other buildings, fire brigade spokesman Prince Billy Anaglate said.

"It was an explosive fire and so the people sheltering at the filling station did not have an opportunity to escape," Anaglate said.

Police and soldiers joined emergency crews helping rescue people trapped in the wreckage.
