20 Indian army men killed in militant attack in North East


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Indian authorities announced here today that 20 members of its military were killed while eleven others were injured in an attack launched by militants in the North Eastern state of Manipur.

A group of armed separatist militants mounted the attack on an army convey using rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons killing 20 army personnel and injuring 11 others in the worst such attack on Indian army in recent past.

Army spokesman Col Rohan Anand said in Delhi that the army team was on its daily routine patrol along Tengnoupal-New Samtal road, some 80 km away from state capital Imphal, when the militants attacked it with a powerful Improvised Explosive Device.

The assailants continued their attack after IED blasts they used heavy firing at the convoy of four army vehicles with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons.

Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, meanwhile, condemned the attack and pledged to punish those behind the cowardly act. He also promised that the army will continue its work towards bringing peace and normalcy in the state.
