Labor Minister: GCC States Ready for Partnerships with ILO

(MENAFN- QNA) GCC states are open to all International Labor Organization-led initiatives and are ready to enter into initiatives with the organization to achieve the strategic goals and create a stable, sustainable and diversified economy, HE Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Dr. Abdullah bin Saleh Al Khulaifi said.

Delivering a speech on behalf of GCC states at the 104th session of the currently underway International Labor Conference, HE the minister said GCC states greatly contribute to the economic growth, raising living standards and bridging the income gap in labor-exporting countries, which, he added, made some parties call on industrial countries to follow the steps of GCC states in limiting that gap.

HE Al Khulaifi said GCC states are working to enhance cooperation with labor-exporting countries in order to stop inappropriate practices that these workers are subjected to by employment agencies in their home countries in terms of fake contracts and hefty fees, a practice that is banned in GCC states.

Despite the difficulty of controlling such behavior, the Qatari minister said, GCC states are in constant and effective communication with labor-exporting countries to put an end to this practice.

HE Al Khulaifi said GCC states are very keen on protecting labor rights in their markets in parallel with maintaining the interests of business owners through legal legislations as well as on-ground practices.

He added that ILO engaged in dialogue that preceded the ratification of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), noting that the organization is an effective and major player today in the ongoing dialogue at the United Nations and its agencies in order to set post-2015 MDGs.
