Abu Dhabi Police to launch road safety initiative in Ramadan

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police will launch a comprehensive initiative to ensure traffic safety on internal and external roads across the emirate of Abu Dhabi during the Holy Month of Ramadan. The step is aimed at reducing traffic accidents, raising awareness and guidance, and assisting all road users in order to achieve accidents-free roads during the holy month.

Within the framework of the 'Your Safety' campaign, Lt. Colonel Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief of Traffic Control Section at the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate, called upon drivers to be civilised while driving, avoid reckless behaviour and excessive speed and refrain from parking their vehicles randomly in front of mosques during prayers and from blocking exits and parking entrances or impeding the movement of vehicles by parking close behind them, as this will cause traffic congestion.

Lt. Colonel Al Shehhi urged drivers to abide by traffic laws during Ramadan, and to avoid over speeding, especially before the Maghrib (sunset) prayers, when drivers tend to increase their speed to try to reach their homes before Iftar. He also called upon motorists to use their seatbelts, avoid the use of hand-held phones while driving, and urged them to use the side indicator lights and to pay attention before turning right or left.

He stressed the importance of reducing speed when approaching pedestrian crossings and to give pedestrians right of way. He urged pedestrians to cross roads safely by using the designated pedestrian crossings, avoid walking along the streets without paying attention and understanding the risks of potential run-over accidents, and abstain from standing too close to roads before making sure that traffic came to a halt.

Lt. Colonel Al Shehhi also stressed the need for extreme caution when boarding or exiting public transport vehicles so as to avoid run-over accidents.

The "Your Safety" campaign includes a number of awareness-raising initiatives to be implemented throughout the holy month of Ramadan until the Eid Al Fitr vacation.
