(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) Kuwait has pledged US$15 million to the United Nations Relief Works Agency, UNRWA, to meet the needs of Palestinian refugees fleeing Syria.
Kuwait News Agency, KUNA, quoted Kuwait's Ambassador to the UN, Mansour Al Otaibi, as saying that the funds will be added to Kuwait's annual US$2 million contribution to UNRWA.
Speaking at the 'Sustaining Human Development and Protecting Rights of Palestine Refugees' summit, he noted that the worsening conditions in the Yarmouk Camp in Damascus, which has housed Palestinian refugees since 1957.
US$15 million from Kuwait would be dedicated specifically to assist those who were forced to flee after the camp was under bombardment by the Assad regime's forces and attacks by terrorist groups, the Kuwaiti ambassador said.
Ambassador Al Otaibi also praised the special role UNRWA is playing amidst the daily difficulties of working under the Israeli siege in Gaza. He urged the international community to continue to provide funds for the agency.
Kuwait has already provided US$130 million to UNRWA, Ambassador Al Otaibi said, and even continued to fund it during the 1990 Iraqi invasion.
He emphasised Kuwait's commitment to the Palestinian refugees, a peaceful solution to the Middle East conflict and the Palestinian right of return in line with UN Resolution 194.
Wednesday's UN meeting commemorated the 65th anniversary of UNRWA, a body dedicated to alleviating the plight of Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza, and refugee camps in the region.
