(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has successfully performed organ transplants on three Doha residents using organs from a deceased donor.
A Qatari and a Filipino resident received a kidney each while an Egyptian expatriate got a liver transplant.
The Qatari recipient urged patients undergoing dialysis treatment to opt for kidney transplant surgery at HMC instead of travelling abroad.
"HMC is providing transplant patients with world-class pre- and post-operative care with an organ transplant team made up of highly qualified professionals including a team of surgeons led by Dr Yousuf al-Maslamani," he said.
The patient had gone through peritoneal dialysis (a treatment for patients with severe chronic kidney disease) for one year prior to his kidney transplant. He expressed gratitude to all the transplant surgeons, physicians and nurses who participated in his transplant procedure and care.
The recipient of the second kidney was a Filipino residing in Doha who had been receiving renal dialysis to provide an artificial replacement for his lost kidney function due to renal failure. He said he was overjoyed to learn that a compatible kidney was available for his long-awaited transplant.
The third organ recipient was an Egyptian living in Doha who was diagnosed with hepatitis C in 2004 and had been on the waiting list for a liver transplant since then.
The patient decided to undergo the liver transplant procedure due to his determination to end his suffering and his confidence in HMC's liver transplant team led by Dr Hatem Khalaf.
He urged people to support HMC's organ donation campaign by pledging to donate their organs either as live or deceased donors to save the lives of more patients in desperate need of the organs.
There has been a significant increase in the number of donated and transplanted organs this year compared to previous years. A total of 13 organ transplants, including four livers and nine kidneys, were donated between January and April.
Dr al-Maslamani, director of Qatar Centre for Organ Transplantation and medical director of Hamad General Hospital, attributed the remarkable increase in the number of organ transplants to the considerable efforts of clinical, nursing and support staff at the Centre, Qatar Organ Donation Centre Hiba as well as the continued support of HMC's management.
